500yd Range™: Two DRILLS to Challenge Your Rifle Skills
LaserHIT iOS App Update | October 2026
You already have your rifle. You already have your favorite shooting position. And with LaserHIT 500yd Range™, you have five recreated distances from 100 to 500 yards, all within an 8-yard indoor firing line.
But how do you know whether your rifle skills are actually improving?
Are you getting faster at acquiring targets and making accurate shots? Or are you becoming more consistent at placing those shots exactly where you want them?
These are two different questions. And now, the updated LaserHIT App for iOS gives you two dedicated Drills to answer them.
Meet Practical Speed and Practical Accuracy.
Same rifle. Same target system. Same five distances. Two different challenges.
FIVE DISTANCES. FOUR POSITIONS. ONE INDOOR FIRING LINE.
If you have read our previous articles about 500yd Range™, you already know the idea behind this training system.
The LaserHIT 500 yd Range Ballistic target set includes four target sheets, each designed for a specific shooting position. Every sheet contains five B3-style targets, scaled to recreate 100, 200, 300, 400, and 500 yards from an actual indoor firing line of just 8 yards.
Choose the target sheet that matches your shooting position:
1A Prone
1B Sitting
1C Kneeling/Bench
1D Standing/Supported
You are not moving your rifle between five firing distances. The target geometry does that work for you.
Although the physical product is called the 500 yd Range Ballistic target set, these two Drills do not yet apply ballistic calculations. The targets are already designed for what's coming next.
The challenge is your ability to establish a stable position, acquire each target, control your rifle, and execute the shot.
Now, let's see what happens when we measure that performance in two different ways.
PRACTICAL SPEED: CAN YOU HIT ALL FIVE IN UNDER 25 SECONDS?
Speed is not simply about pulling the trigger faster.
It is about how efficiently you can acquire a target, settle your sight picture, execute the shot, and move to the next one.
Practical Speed gives you five targets at five recreated distances, with five shots to complete the Stage.
Your goal is to hit all five targets in under 25 seconds.
The Drill allows a maximum Stage time of 50 seconds, but the real challenge is the 25-second goal.
Think about what happens as you progress from the larger 100-yard target to the much smaller 500-yard target.
You cannot treat every target the same way. Your sight picture, rifle stability, and time spent confirming the shot all become part of the result.
And a miss matters. The Drill applies a 50-second miss penalty, so simply rushing through five shots will not deliver a successful result.
This is where speed and rifle control have to work together.
PRACTICAL ACCURACY: CAN YOU SCORE A PERFECT 20?
Now take the same rifle, same position, and same five distances.
But forget the race against the 25-second clock.
Practical Accuracy gives you a different objective: score 20 points by hitting the A-zone on all five targets.
You have five shots and a 120-second Stage time limit.
There is no required target order. Start with whichever distance you prefer.
But here is the important detail: only the first hit on each target counts toward your score.
If you hit the same target again, that additional hit earns no points.
And if you miss a target completely, that shot still counts toward your five-shot Stage. The missed target remains available, but trying again means using one of your remaining shots.
That creates a very different decision from Practical Speed.
Do you take a little more time to establish the best possible sight picture? Do you start with the smallest target while your position is fresh? Or do you work through the distances in order?
The App does not dictate your target sequence.
Your objective is simple: five A-zone hits, five different distances, 20 points.
SAME TARGETS. DIFFERENT PRESSURE.
This is why we developed two separate Drills rather than combining everything into one score.
Practical Speed asks how efficiently you can complete the five-distance challenge.
Practical Accuracy asks how precisely you can place those five shots.
One emphasizes target acquisition, transitions, and time management.
The other emphasizes controlled execution, shot placement, and scoring consistency.
Both use the same 500 yd Range Ballistic target set and let you compare your results while working from your chosen shooting position.
Both Drills are currently available on iOS, with Android support scheduled for October 2026.
You can spend one session working on Practical Accuracy and another challenging your Practical Speed.
Or alternate between them to see how changes in pace affect your results.
YOUR RESULTS SHOULD TELL YOU SOMETHING.
Completing a Stage is useful. Knowing whether your performance is improving is much more useful.
That is why both Drills include ongoing Performance Reports.
In Practical Speed, the App tracks your total time against the 25-second goal.
In Practical Accuracy, it tracks your total score against the 20-point goal.
Each completed Stage contributes to your performance history, with a visual bar showing whether you achieved the Drill's objective.
You can also review your latest result, changes from previous performance, and Success Rate.
The progress indicator is based on your most recent five-shot Stage, while the Stage history helps you see how consistently you are meeting the objective.
This gives you something more meaningful than remembering that you had a good practice session.
You have numbers to compare.
And when you change your shooting position, you have another opportunity to challenge those numbers.
And don't forget to check Total Hits -> Live Fire Value to track your estimated ammunition savings. You can adjust the ammunition cost to keep the estimate relevant to what you shoot.
WHAT DO YOU NEED TO GET STARTED?
If you already have a LaserHIT 500yd Range™ training kit and the corresponding 500 yd Range Ballistic target set, much of the preparation will be familiar.
Select the target sheet for your shooting position and mount it securely.
Position your iPhone or iPad approximately 2-3 feet from the target, with the camera facing the entire target sheet.
For scoped rifles, use the appropriate LaserHIT Rifle Scope Focus Adapter when needed.
Insert your LaserHIT training cartridge, open the LaserHIT App, and select the corresponding 500yd Range™ Drill.
Complete Express Setup, making sure all five targets and the Reload Mark are visible within the camera view.
Then move to your 8-yard firing line.
For precision and repeatability, we recommend LaserHIT HD or LR training cartridges. Keep all live ammunition outside the dry-fire training area.
The same target system is ready for either Drill. You are simply choosing what you want to measure today.
BEFORE YOU GO
Here is an interesting experiment.
Start with Practical Accuracy. See whether you can achieve five A-zone hits across the full 100-500-yard recreated range.
Then switch to Practical Speed.
Can you hit all five targets while reducing the time to under 25 seconds?
Or reverse the order. Complete the Speed challenge first, then slow down and see what happens to your shot placement.
The point is not that one Drill is better than the other.
They expose different parts of your rifle handling and shooting discipline.
Explore the LaserHIT 500yd Range™ training system and discover what the updated LaserHIT App can add to your indoor rifle practice.
