FreeTarget Advanced: A Quiet Option for Custom Drills

FreeTarget Advanced Unlocks Precision Training With Any Object

LaserHIT’s FreeTarget Advanced mode does something no other laser dry-fire system offers. It turns any solid surface into a precision training point completed with shot placement, grouping metrics, and a custom-defined vital zone.

Whether you're working with mannequins, training dummies, boxes, coffee machines, or mock barricades, FreeTarget lets you transform the environment around you into a fully measurable dry-fire setup.

This post breaks down how FreeTarget Advanced works, and why it's a valuable tool for law enforcement, military, and tactical instructors working in compact or improvised spaces.

What Makes FreeTarget Advanced Different

Unlike LaserHIT's standard B3-target modes, FreeTarget is not limited to printed silhouettes. It works with:

  • Any solid, non-reflective object

  • Any size or shape

  • Indoor environments with stable lighting

  • Flat or dimensional targets (such as dummy torsos)

This opens the door to new training possibilities using improvised objects as stand-ins for human threats or urban cover.

The Key Feature: Precision Control on Any Object

At the core of FreeTarget Advanced is the ability to define a virtual vital zone on any visible surface. This means:

  • You decide where a successful hit should land

  • You define the radius of the critical zone (e.g., head, chest, or center-mass)

  • You track hit accuracy by distance and angle

As long as your target is stable and clearly visible to the phone’s camera, you can conduct real-world accuracy drills — no printed target required.

Core Settings for Structured Use

Required Equipment

  • HD LaserHIT cartridge

  • LaserHIT app with FreeTarget Advanced

  • One or more solid objects to use as targets

  • LaserHIT reload mark for remote restart

  • 3 to 17 yards of space (room or hallway)

App Configuration

  • Firing Distance: Enter your actual training distance (up to 17.6 yards)

  • Target Scale: Up to 1:100, for long-range simulation

  • Units: Inch, cm, MOA, MRAD, or MIL

  • Vital Zone Radius: Define the scoring area based on your training goal

    • Example: 2-inch zone for headshots, 6-inch zone for chest hits

On-Screen Results (enable)

  • Windage and elevation (required for Vital Zone scoring)

  • Group

Virtual Spotter: Optional to announce hit placement in real time

Common Settings

  • Hit hole size: Small or medium

  • Hit max per session: 1 to 3

  • Timeout and restart delay: User-defined

Training Scenarios You Can Run

Precision Shot Placement

Assign small vital zones to improvised targets, such as:

  • A coffee machine (simulate center-mass or control panel hit)

  • A torso dummy (define cranial or chest hit zones)

  • A doorframe or wall corner (simulate a partial target behind cover)

One-Handed and Weak-Hand Drills

Replicate LE and military drills by running:

  • 3 shots with dominant hand on target 1

  • 3 shots with support hand on target 2

  • Track grouping and accuracy separately for each side

Positional Practice

Use home furniture or corners to replicate constrained environments:

  • Seated draw and shoot

  • Kneeling or prone shots

  • Barricade-lean engagement

Concealed Draw and Snap Shot

Set up one-shot drills under time pressure:

  • Session length: 1 shot

  • Timeout: 10 seconds

  • Ideal for appendix carry, scoop draw, and weak-hand access under stress

Before You Go

FreeTarget Advanced is not about improvising targets. It is about bringing precision and accuracy to improvised situations.

  • Define the vital zone

  • Set the distance

  • Measure the result

This mode supports disciplined dry-fire training when live-fire is unavailable, or when unique mission-specific skills are required. You are not just pointing at objects. You are defining expectations and measuring shot discipline in real time.
